Ring

Students in our school district have the opportunity for their senior class ring to be presented by an educator. Students can select someone they have connected with throughout their time in the district. My oldest asked his 6th-grade history teacher to present his ring.
The student writes a letter explaining why they selected who they did. Chase chose Ms. Thornton because “she let me perform my magic and comedy routines in her class.” He said she always supported his interests and was the only teacher he let call him Elliott (his first name). While he was in her class, Ms. Thornton’s grandmother passed away. At her house, she found an E.T. souvenir glass from “a really long time ago.” It was the 80s, but anyway. She said she thought of him when she saw it. The glass has E.T. pointing at Elliott and saying, “I’ll be right here.”
To his teacher, it was a small moment for a class clown. I’m pretty sure she had forgotten about the exchange. To Chase, this moment touched him permanently. At the ring presentation, this story was read by the Vice Principal. As she read, he pulled the glass from inside his coat to show Ms. Thornton. The entire auditorium was deeply touched.
Day in and day out, we often have familiar routines. There are little opportunities along the way we can connect with other people. Those moments that may seem small from our side can be powerful to the recipient. They can be even more touching when we share the experience later.
I sometimes get in such a hustle I miss opportunities to connect with others. I might underestimate the importance this moment might be for someone else. I might forget to let others know when they’ve done something meaningful for me.
Do I take the time to appreciate those around me? Can I slow down to be a highlight in someone’s day? Will I be there for you?
Be curious, be kind, be whole, do good things.
